you've opened your gifts, attended all the holiday feasts, and have put pen to paper to write out all your resolutions! congrats! you ended 2012 big and you're starting 2013 off on a good foot.
if one of your resolutions this year is to live a more well-balanced lifestyle, you aren't alone. many use the start of the new year as a fresh new start to eating better, exercising more, and being more in tune. but with all the tidbits of advice, diet plans, and workout videos to choose from it can get overwhelming and make you want to throw in the towel as early as ... today? (we hope not!) so where do you begin?
you begin small. small steps forward each day to that one big goal of a stronger, better you.
here are some tips that we found and we plan to follow. while quite straight forward and probably no-brainers, sometimes you just need to be reminded!
- rather than a complete overhaul of your diet, switch or remove one or two items from your daily diet and add on slowly every one or two weeks. for example, instead of cutting out all meat right off the bat to start a new vegetarian lifestyle, how about eliminating red meats first, then chicken, and then fish. remember, you will still be learning about (and searching for) vegetarian recipes and substitutes for awhile before you fall in line, so being able to turn to some familiar items once or twice a week can prevent a lapse back to a full meaty lifestyle!
- there is no shame in a short workout and if you are going from couch cruiser to running renegade, then start at the beginning and go easy on yourself. while your enthusiasm may want you to go full blown on your first run of ... ever ... resist the urge. google and research running plans that start you off with walk/run intervals that increase every week. you are more likely to stick with it if you don't feel like dying a quarter way in to your first run.
- find balance in all areas of life. diet and exercise are fundamentals to living better, but you have to take care of you mind too. finding time to unwind at the end of the each day can be tough, but the simple exercise of moving onto paper all the thoughts outstanding in your head can relax you long enough to get a good's night rest. take ten minutes to write out all the things you had hoped to get done or want to get done and prepare it for the following day. this way your mind won't feel so frenetic before bed and when you wake up.
so we have shared with you - time for you to share with us! how are you managing your list of resolutions and ensuring that most of them will be a success?
